I had a little pear tree
.
Nothing would it bear.
.
But a silver nutmeg… Hang on! It didn’t even bear that last year.
.
I totally mastered pickled pears, I was the hostess with the… well, the pickled pears… but I was content with that. A slice of creamy stilton, a dash of pickled pears… the guests forgot that I hadn’t actually cooked anything other than the dessert and that actually, although I had been absolutely brilliant at pouring drinks, it was my poor beleaguered husband (who is pretty anti social anyway so he likes it ok?) who actually cooked the food.
.
Last year the pear trees let me down: just as I had mastered my dinner party take over, the trees decided that they didn’t want to marry the Queen of Spain, that they were fine with just lurking, in amongst the roses, pretending that no one could see them so they weren’t really there and producing the minimal quota for hostess je ne sais quoidom: two jars.
.
It was a fruital affront, I was forced to slave over La Aga for a good long time, in the full and certain knowledge that I could only impress one or two unsuspecting groups of guests (I talk a good game of cookery). Obviously I managed this brilliantly, dropping in the “oh these? These pickled pears? Yes! (insert twinkly carefree laughter), Yes, I made them, of course you can have the recipe, it is so very simple” but I missed my several months of impressing guests.
.
However, this year my (I did disown them but they are back in my culinary bosom) pear trees are full of blossom and promised fruits. I suspect their fruition may well tie in with the biggest party we have ever known so I will be grateful for their year off and cannot wait to serve my “this will make you think I cooked everything” after dinner show stopper. .
Happy sit and enjoy the fruits of your labours to come Saturday. X
.
NB: This was illegally snapped yesterday but I refuse to give into the grey sky today so I am pretending it is sunny. I shall will the sunshine back into my garden. .
